Drivers have been warned to make sure their vehicle is winter-ready after weather experts have predicted snow, frost and ice will make an appearance across the UK. 

The Met Office has revealed temperatures could plumet to -10C in isolated parts of the country between Wednesday (December 7th) and Monday, thanks to wind from the Arctic region. 

Consequently, RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis has issued a warning to drivers, saying: “Our advice is to be winter ready – check tyres are properly inflated and with good tread, while topping up oil, coolant and screen wash levels if needed.”

He also suggested those with older batteries need to give their car a 20-minute drive before the cold arrives, as this will improve the chances of the battery coping with freezing conditions. 

To keep safe when on the road, Mr Dennis advised having a fully charged mobile phone at all times when on the road and carrying a blanket in case the vehicle breaks down. 

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the east of England this week, expecting to see wintry conditions in many parts of the UK. 

Deputy chief meteorologist Rebekah Sherwin said daytime temperatures will even struggle to rise above freezing and are likely to remain below average for this time of the year throughout next week as well. 

The Highway Code stipulates clearing the windscreen of snow, ice, and mist before setting off, so it is possible to see through every glass panel.
