If having to get up and go to work when the world is cold and dark isn’t enough to make you want to stay in bed, then you leave to the house to find you have to defrost the car windscreen. It’s an unpleasant task when you’re not quite awake and still got a chilly commute to face.
However, the Mirror reports that thanks to a tip from a driving school’s TikTok account called Driving Test Success, there is a simple ‘trick’ to defrost the windscreen without all that scraping and de-icing.
TikTok is known for its ‘life hacks’ and tricks that are meant to simplify a task, and this particular hack involves simply activating your card windscreen fan, which will warm the glass from the inside, and help melt the frost.
The video says: “Frozen windscreen? Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max. The ice will start to melt from the heat. Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal.”
While for many people this may not be a shocking revelation, some drivers commented on the post saying that they had never seen this ‘hack’ before, with one user adding ‘Wow, magic! The ice is gone.’
The AA has also encouraged drivers to turn on the warm air blowers and heated mirrors to quickly and safely clear frost.
“Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen. Switch on the rear windscreen heater and heated mirrors, if you have them. Turn on the air-con. It’s not just for summer – it’ll remove moisture from the air to stop the car from misting up,” the association said.
However, resist the urge to use your hands to wipe misted-up windows, as you will leave greasy smears, and any diamond-studded rings can scratch the glass. Also, never use boiling hot water to melt the ice off the windscreen, as the can cause the glass to shatter.
