Summer can bring a range of driving perils that could lead to damage to your car, including the windscreen.
The list includes being dazzled by the sun can cause accidents that may result in all manner of damage to a car. Often you may find yourself driving unfamiliar roads or fatigued after being behind the wheel for many hours at a time as you venture on holiday.
Sometimes, however, it is not by accident that your windscreen, or indeed other parts of your car, can be damaged. Sometimes it is straightforward vandalism that leaves you needing a windscreen replacement.
On occasion this can be apparently motiveless; news reports from Merseyside in the last few days covered the case of two young men being arrested in New Ferry on the Wirral after a spate of car windscreens being smashed, apparently inflicted deliberately late on a Saturday night.
It might be thought this was pretty rare, particularly for a whole series of windscreens to be broken across a couple of neighbouring streets. However, certain circumstances may make it more likely.
The combination of sunshine and alcohol can certainly be too much for some people, causing them to misbehave in summer, with all sorts of consequences for nearby people and property. Whether the Wirral incident was alcohol-related is not yet known, but often this is the case.
A particular concern may arise because the Euro 2024 championships are on, with both England and Scotland taking part in the tournament.
Defeat after a few drinks will sometimes bring the worst out in people and past experience has shown that if England in particular go a long way in the tournament only to bow out in painful fashion (usually on penalties), the way some respond can be particularly excessive. Many an innocent car windscreen has been among the panes of glass broken at such times.
That may be seen as an indictment of society, of youth, or of a section of football fandom, but whatever it is, it sadly adds to the range of risks to car windscreens.
