The recent extreme weather in the UK took a turn for the worst recently when a deluge of huge hailstones smashed through car windscreens and dented vehicles in Leicestershire.
Leicestershire Live reports that a resident of Kibworth, Leicestershire heard smashing sounds on the evening of Tuesday 20 July, and found that his Volkswagen Polo had taken a battering from the falling ice, with some chunks as large as golf balls.
The owner of the car, Kevin Messenger, was horrified to see his vehicle being damaged by the massive hailstones, as well as the vehicles of his neighbours
According to residents, the sun was shining one minute, then they had to run for cover as the hailstorm came down.
Mr Messenger said: “The weather just came from nowhere. I got a broken windscreen, and pretty bad dents along the side from the stones that were flying around, but not as much as some other people in the village.”
He explained that his partner and himself were looking out the window after hearing the sound of breaking glass, and noticed a neighbour’s greenhouse had been destroyed. When going to offer help, his partner noticed the damage to the VW Polo.
He cleared out his garage quickly so he could park the car under cover, adding: “It was okay indoors, but when I went to move the car after the windscreen shattered the noise in the car was almost like you were being pelted with rocks.”
Katie Jaffar, also from Kibworth, Leicestershire, told BBC News both of their family cars were a ‘total write-off’ and covered in big dents.
“One minute the kids were playing with their friends in the paddling pool and it was gloriously hot,” Mrs Jaffar said.
“The next minute huge dollops of rain started falling and then it turned into hail – huge lumps of it thundering down,” she said, adding that the ordeal was ‘pretty terrifying’.
